For children who feel nervous about dental procedures, nitrous oxide offers a gentle way to help them relax. This safe, mild anxiolytic has been used in pediatric dentistry for decades, and it is the lightest of the three comfort options Dr. Andrea offers.

How it works
Your child breathes the odorless gas, mixed with oxygen, through a soft nose mask while remaining fully awake and able to communicate. It works within minutes to create a calm, comfortable feeling, and it has mild pain-relieving properties as well.
At Poppy Kids, we let our young patients choose their favorite scented mask. Options include bubblegum, orange, strawberry, and grape.
Is it safe?
Nitrous oxide has one of the longest safety records in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Andrea carefully monitors the level throughout the procedure, adjusting it to your child's needs.
- Non-allergenic and non-irritating: it does not cause allergic reactions, and it is safe for children with asthma or other respiratory conditions when administered appropriately.
- Minimal side effects: they are rare and generally mild, such as slight dizziness or nausea, and typically resolve quickly after the procedure.
- Careful monitoring: your child is watched closely by the dental team for the whole visit.
- Completely reversible: as soon as the gas is turned off, it is quickly expelled from the body through normal breathing.

Nitrous oxide is the right fit when a child needs a little help settling in for treatment. It is especially useful for children who have:

Afterward, five minutes of pure oxygen completely clears the gas from your child's system. There is no lingering sedation, so normal activities can resume immediately, whether that is school, play, or a snack.

Three levels, matched to your child's age, anxiety, and treatment needs. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) provides mild relaxation while your child stays fully awake. Oral conscious sedation — a liquid medication given in the office — helps children who need more than nitrous but not full sleep; Dr. Andrea holds a certificate in oral conscious sedation and monitors continuously following AAPD guidelines. For extensive treatment, very young children, or kids with special healthcare needs, we provide general anesthesia in partnership with Bay Anesthesia's pediatric dental anesthesiologists, completing all treatment in a single visit while your child sleeps.
Will my child be asleep?
No. With nitrous oxide your child stays fully awake and able to talk; it simply takes the edge off. Sleep dentistry is general anesthesia, a separate option for children who need extensive treatment.
How long does it take to wear off?
Minutes. Once treatment is done, five minutes of pure oxygen clears the gas completely, and there is no lingering sedation.
