Your child's first visit to Poppy Kids

We believe that early dental care sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Following the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) guidelines, we recommend establishing your child's dental home by age 1 or within 6 months of their first tooth's arrival. These early visits help develop positive associations with dental care and establish good oral health habits from the start. Here's how the visit goes.

  1. A friendly tour

Your visit begins with a friendly tour of our modern pediatric dental office. Our team is dedicated to creating a comfortable, positive environment where children can feel at ease and learn that dental visits can be a positive experience.

  2. A gentle, personalized exam

Dr. Andrea provides a comprehensive evaluation tailored to your child's unique needs. Using gentle techniques and advanced digital technology, we may recommend:

    • A thorough, kid-friendly cleaning
    • Low-radiation digital radiographs for detailed imaging
    • Professional fluoride treatment for cavity prevention
  3. Findings you can actually see

Dr. Andrea takes time to perform a detailed examination, sharing her findings through interactive digital presentations that make understanding your child's dental health both easy and engaging. As a pediatric specialist, she'll craft a personalized care plan that considers your child's specific needs, growth patterns, and development stages.

  4. Learning together

We believe knowledge is the key to lasting dental health! During your visit, we'll explore:

    • Age-appropriate brushing techniques
    • Flossing made simple
    • Evidence-based fluoride recommendations
    • Smart choices for tooth-friendly foods and drinks
  5. A special farewell

We believe in celebrating every dental visit! At the end of their appointment, each child receives a personalized goodie bag carefully prepared by Dr. Andrea and the Poppy Team, filled with age-appropriate dental care items. Children also get to choose their own toy from our treasure basket and pick out a fun sticker. These small rewards help reinforce that dental visits are positive experiences.

  6. Your next visit

We typically recommend follow-up visits every 3-6 months, customized to your child's individual needs. These regular visits help us maintain optimal oral health while building confidence and trust.

Parents are part of the visit

At Poppy Kids, we embrace a collaborative approach to your child's dental care. Our open-door policy welcomes parents to be part of the dental experience, because great dental care is a team effort. As a parent, you know your child best, and Dr. Andrea values your insights in creating the most positive experience possible. Whether you choose to accompany your child during treatment or watch them build independence, we support what works best for your family.

How to prepare

A few small things make the first visit smoother, and most of them happen at home.

  • Talk about it as something fun. Counting teeth, riding in the chair. Skip words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “drill,” even reassuringly, since they plant worries.
  • Practice at home. Picture books and pretend dentist visits help younger children know what to expect.
  • Pick a rested, fed time of day. Mid-morning usually works best.
  • Bring a comfort item. A favorite toy or book helps a new place feel familiar.
  • Bring your questions. Dr. Andrea sets aside time to talk through anything on your mind.
  • Plan the reward. A toy from the treasure basket is waiting at the end.

Five stars is not enough for Poppy Kids. My son has a fear of dentistry and struggles so much in big part due to having sensory sensitivities. Other pediatrics couldn’t get x rays and said our only option was to sedate him. Poppy Kids were so patient and thorough with him. They were able to get the needed x rays. They continue to do their best and help him through each appointment but never push past his limits. They truly want this to be a positive experience. Everyone is so kind and nurturing. I highly recommend Poppy Kids!

We loved our first visit to Poppy’s! They are so welcoming and informative. Our daughter had so much fun with all the books and stuffies they have in the exam room. They were very patient with her during the exam, which can be hard for a 19 month old. They prepared us well for what she would do (crying, which she did) and that it’s very normal. We can’t wait to come back!

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Andrea and the team at Poppy Kids Pediatric Dentistry. The attention to detail from beginning to end has felt thoughtful, caring, thorough and professional. Whether scheduling an appointment, being in the chair, talking about care plans, dealing with insurance… I and my kids always have felt important, uniquely seen, and professionally cared for — all at once, which I find unique in healthcare and dentistry. I have three kids, and Dr. Andrea approaches each of them uniquely and takes time to understand them holistically. She is up to date on best practices, which, combined with her hands-on experience with kids over the years, really makes you confident you’re getting the best possible care. I’ve been to other pediatric dentists in Marin and San Francisco, and this is the only one I completely trust AND my kids are excited for!! Definitely recommend.

First visit questions

How often should my child see the dentist?

Every six months is the standard rhythm for checkups and cleanings — cavities in baby teeth can move quickly, and twice-yearly visits let us catch small problems while they are still small. Some children benefit from more frequent care: Dr. Andrea may recommend visits every three to four months for kids with higher cavity risk, orthodontic appliances, or habits we are actively monitoring. Regular visits also build familiarity with the dental office, which is the best long-term antidote to dental anxiety.

Why should your child see a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist?

Board-certified pediatric dentist are held to the highest standards in pediatric dental care. These dentists have completed specialized training and a voluntary certification process, emphasizing their proficiency in dental treatments tailored specifically for children. Their board certification indicates a commitment to continuous learning and adherence to the latest advancements in pediatric dentistry. Your child's dental health is paramount, which is why choosing a board-certified pediatric dentist like Dr. Andrea Aduna is essential. Dr. Aduna's board certification underscores her specialized training, expertise in pediatric dental care, and dedication to the highest standards of practice. This level of recognition is a testament to her commitment to providing the best possible dental care for children, ensuring a solid foundation for lifelong oral health.‍
